Handala Necklace

Meaning of Handala:

Illustarted by the Palestinian Naji Al-Ali in 1969 is Handala. Handala is the story of every Palestinian child, adult and elderly living in refugee camps, the diaspora and in Palestinian. Handala is 10 years old, and will always be 10 years old until Palestine is freed, then he will grow up. Handala also has his back turned to symbolise how to world have turned their back on the Palestinian cause and children. He has no face because he is the story of every Palestinian.  

Naji Al-Ali's introduction of the character Handala is the following:

“Dear reader, allow me to introduce myself: my name is Handala. My father’s name: not necessary. My mother’s name is Nakba, and my sister’s name is Fatima. 

My shoe size: I do not know, because I am always barefoot. 

My nationality: I am not Palestinian, not Kuwaiti, not Lebanese, not Egyptian. Yours truly is simply an Arab human being.”
